Making new instruments

It is easy to think that there are plenty of violins already! They don't seem to ever go out of use either, so why spend hundreds of hours creating a new one? However, a newly built instrument always brings something new and unique to the world if it is created with a strong character of its own and has an appealing personal expression. Making of bowed instruments is a centuries old traditional craft that is still extremely vital. The trend in recent years has been to make "copies" of the old masters, but this is fortunately now changing with the fact that more makers are building in a more original and unique style. The antique Italians are, first and foremost, valued precisely because each maker had a strong and recognizable expression of their own, and only drew more subtle inspiration from one another. Magnus Nedregård originally started with new making, and is still building new instruments, although restoration takes up most of his time today.
